Last Sunday was the final match of the under 17 and under 20 league at Erith and yet again the wind was blowing on an athletics day. And yet again it was blowing against the sprinters – and for reasons I did not understand the long jumpers also had to jump into the wind, although the triple jumpers were luckier to have their run-up turned round so that the wind was behind them. The match had a rather end of term feel about it (as does this report I think) and Team Sussex – the team we are part of along with Lewes and Haywards Heath – seemed to be missing more athletes than most.
Sarah Killick-Bird becomes a senior lady next year and so this was her last appearance in the league. She got things off to a good start with a win in the 400 hurdles and ended the match by badly spiking herself in her last attempt in the triple jump. Sister Ellie keeps looking as if she’ll go over 1.60 metres in the high jump, but hasn’t quite made it yet. However her 1.55 metres clearance won her the under 17 event. Chloe Hollamby, though not 100% well, made it 4 wins out of the 4 league meetings in the under 17 300 metres. Abby Beswick made it 3 wins out of 4 in the under 17 80 metres hurdles but found the wind against her, as well as in her other 2 events – the 100 metres and the long jump. Sarah Rusling was a late arrival and rushed over to the javelin as soon as she arrived before a useful 10.35 metres in the triple jump.
Kieran Johnstone had a useful javelin throw of just over 26 metres (with the senior javelin though he’s an under 17) and he amused us all at the end of the day by taking on the 2000 metres steeplechase and, on the last lap, trying to do the water jump without a foot on the barrier. With Elric Doswell back from school in Ely we supplied all three triple jumpers with Nori Ishii producing one of the few pbs on the day with a best of 11.71 metres. Elric and Daniel Rusling had both earned second places earlier in the day in the under 20 long jump.
And more or less all our athletes ended the day with a relay run or two.
