Very well done to all our athletes at the Sussex and Surrey Indoor Championships which were held at Sutton over the weekend – we came away with a good selection of medals.
Abby Beswick led the way with 4 medals in Sussex under 17 events (and she perhaps wished that she had entered the high and triple jumps as well). On Saturday she started by winning the 60 metres hurdles in a time of 9.04 seconds before the long jump. A first round jump of 4.90 metres was a pb which she equalled later. And then with her sixth and last jump she went over 5 metres for the first time with 5.18 metres for another first place.
Later on the Saturday evening she ran in the 60 metres. In her heat she came first in a time of 8.21 seconds and in the final she was second, again in 8.21 seconds. Then on Sunday morning she returned for the shot putt and her best throw of 7.68 metres gave her another second place.
On the Saturday Jamie Osborne picked up three medals and Tom Dean two medals in the Sussex Under 15 events. Jamie started with a 1.50 metres clearance in the high jump for first place – with Tom coming second with 1.40 metres. Later in the day the two picked up another two medals in the long jump. This time it was Tom who picked up the winner’s medal with 5.26 metres – his first time over 5 metres – with Jamie second with 5.08 metres (another pb). Then at the end of the day Jamie ran in the 60 metres sprint where he finished third in a time of 8.08 seconds.
Also on the Saturday Lois Drummie in the Surrey under 17 events recorded good times in the heats and final of the 60 metres hurdles with 9.47 seconds and then 9.42. She then went to the long jump and produced a pb of 4.77 metres with her first jump. She then went on to jump 4.77 metres with another 3 of her jumps, making 4 jumps of 4.77 out of her 6 attempts. And do you know what number she was wearing ? Number 77. Anyway this gave her third place. On the Sunday she returned for the triple jump and this time her distances were more spread out. After an opening no jump her last 5 jumps were between 9.93 and 9.99 metres ! She ended up in second place.
Another first place came in the Sussex under 15 girls shot putt on Sunday morning where a first round putt of 9.46 metres turned out to be Vicki Pellett’s best putt – though she had two more throws of 9 metres or more. She also went further than all the Surrey under 15 throwers. And the last Sussex athlete to mention is Chloe Hollamby in the under 20 60 metres sprint. As we know 60 metres is a bit short for Chloe as it normally takes her that long to really get going. 8.3 seconds was her time, just missing out on the top 3. And in the Surrey under 20 jumps Sarah Rusling was not quite at her best with 4.71 metres in the long jump and 10.11 in the triple.
