No matches over this current weekend – though Chloe Hollamby will be competing later today for Crawley in their British league match at Lee Valley – and so a quieter week than normal. However a few results to bring you from Open Meetings earlier in the week.
On Bank Holiday Monday Chloe went to the Mile End Open Meeting in East London. She was hoping for some competition from some Essex/London athletes in her 400 metres, but she was an easy winner. However it was a new pb (and a new under 20 club record) of 59.07 seconds – English Schools entry standard is 58.8. Let’s hope she finds more competition at today’s British League match. She also ran the 200 metres shortly after the 400 – but into a gale.
On the same afternoon Wayne Gadd was hurdling and long-jumping in Stevenage in Hertfordshire. 65.57 seconds in the 400 hurdles and 5.42 metres in the long. And finally on Tuesday evening under 15 Harry Durgan took part in his first club event when he ran the mile at the Tonbridge Open. Tuesday was of course the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister’s first 4 minute mile in 1954 (which I’m sure that I can remember watching on the telly). Harry didn’t quite make it round in 4 minutes but he won his race in just over 5 and a half minutes.
We get back into league action later this week when our Under 13 athletes (school years 6 and 7) compete at K2 on Thursday evening (May 15th). For many this will be their first match and we wish them well. Those in school years 4 and 5 will be able to take part in non-scoring events at this meeting.
Then on Saturday (May 17th) the senior athletes will have to be up early to catch the coach that we are taking to Winchester for the second league match of the season. 8.30 is the time to meet at Imberhorne School. We are up against Yeovil, Poole Runners and, rather strangely, our near neighbours Horsham as well as the home Winchester club. A few more male athletes than we had for the first match would be very handy.
There was due to be an under 15 match at Broadbridge Heath on Friday evening but this has had to be postponed. They have had problems working on the football pitch in the middle of the track and the long throws would not have been able to take place. So the meeting has been postponed and an extra match will be fitted in late July. So the first match for the under 15 athletes will now be on Friday June 6th at Broadbridge Heath.
Entries for the Sussex and Surrey County Championships to be held over the weekend of May 24th and 25th have now closed – it is good to see lots of our athletes entered for the Sussex Championships. And for those at school in Sussex there is a Combined Events Schools meeting at Brighton over the summer half-term week – on Wednesday May 28th. Entry is free and entry forms are available on the Sussex Athletics website – look for the school news. Alternatively talk to Lester Medcalf for forms.
