We had a great evening last Friday at Horsham for the first Sussex Under 15 league match of the summer. I counted 26 of our athletes taking part (though we still had a couple of gaps) and we finished second behind the very strong Crawley team – and indeed we were first in the boys match (and second in the girls match). So well done to everybody who competed, and the mums and dads who were there to support the athletes. And a special thank you to the parents who helped us in judging our allocated field events – the 2 javelins. The full results for our athletes are now on the website. Go into the “Leagues” section of the website and then onto Sussex Under 15 League.
Tom Dean at last broke the club under 15 800 metres record (set in 1984 by Chris McCrory’s son Stephen) as he lowered his best time to 2 minutes 6.3 seconds running in the only way he knows how – fast from the start. (He still needs to take off 0.3 seconds to get the English Schools entry standard.) He then won the long jump and was part of the 4 x 100 relay team that shaved another 0.1 seconds off their own record to record 48.8 seconds. (It’s only fair to tell you that we finished up about 15 metres behind the Crawley relay team – but they were disqualified because their last baton change took place outside the box.)
Dan Elliott’s first appearance of the season saw him gain three B string second places and the male throwers – Ben Beard, Kiall Fellows and Luke Webb with Harry Durgan again doing well in the shot as well as his more familiar 1500 metres run – also producing a string of good performances as they worked their way round the inner field.
For the girls we had a couple of new under 15 club records – though I think it’s only fair to point out that these records are often changing as new weights for the shot and javelin were introduced for this season. But Vicki Pellet squeezed out a few more centimetres to win the shot with 9.27 metres (to add to her hammer win) while Hannah Sands became the third javelin record holder in the last 2 weeks. And it’s good to see the progress being made by Lizzie Aronson in the throws, and especially the discus where she threw further than Vicki.
Another athlete making good progress over the last few weeks is Amber West who won the long jump with 4.43 metres – having qualified a couple of weeks ago for this coming week’s Sussex Schools Championships with a jump of over 4.50 metres in the trials.
As I’ve already said the full results are on the website. So go and have a look. The next evening match in the Under 15 League is on Friday July 4th, again at Broadbridge Heath. Another 25 or even more athletes would be great. We could still do with someone to offer to do the B string in the girls hammer.
And last Wednesday Mia Russell took part in the Somerset Under 14 (year 8) schools county championships in Yeovil. 12.82 seconds in the 75 metres hurdles gave her first place and high jump clearance of 1.45 metres gave her second place. The winner also jumped 1.45 but Mia had one more failure. So very well done to Mia.
Towards the end of this week we have a busy couple of days. On Thursday evening the under 13s (years 6 and 7) have their second match of the season – this time at Horsham. There will be plenty of space for non-scorers and so younger athletes will also be able to take part. Let’s hope for another good turn-out. And on Saturday the Sussex County Schools Championships take place. As a club we have no say over who is selected for this event but we will have a number of our club members competing at K2 (and one or two at Kingston in the Surrey Schools).
Please note that the under 13 match is taking away a number of coaches and this means that there will be no training this Thursday evening June 12th – whether you are a 7 o’clock athlete or a 7.30 athlete.
