Saturday’s under 13 and under 15 match in Gillingham (but why weren’t there more under 13s ?)

A warm sunny – and dry – day at Gillingham for the last Saturday match of the season for our combined under 13 and under 15 team – although there are still midweek matches for both sets of athletes.  The undoubted star performance of the day came from Tom Dean. One week after his success in the 800 metres at the English Schools Championships Tom had a go at the 1500 metres. Having already set new under 15 club records in the 800 metres he now set a new under 15 club record as he won the 1500m metres. 4 minutes 19.3 seconds was nearly half a second faster than Stephen McCrory’s record set 30 years ago in 1984. (And Harry Durgan was able to win the B string race with a new pb as well). Tom also threw the javelin a fair distance of just over 29 metres.

Tom wasn’t the only athlete to set a new club record at Gillingham, although the other record was not 30 years old. Indeed the old record was set only 6 weeks ago. Hannah Sands threw the under 15 500g javelin 15.44 metres to beat her own record of just under 14 metres.

Rienel Bronilla impressed when he competed for the first time a couple of weeks ago and he again impressed this week with a winning long jump of 5.21 metres (with Jamie Osborne winning the B string). Vicki Pellett won the hammer and shot and it was good to see Lizzy Mycock competing alongside Vicki. There was a strong run by Naomi Insole as she came second in the 300 metres in 45.5 seconds.

Full results will appear on the website in due course. However it was very disappointing to see only 5 under 13 athletes at the match – very well done to Erin Harnett, Izzy Sims and Antonia Deeley for the girls and Daniel O’Sullivan and Ollie Cubberley for the boys. But where were the rest of you ?

Later this week we have matches for most of our athletes. On Thursday evening the under 13s will be in action at Horsham – there will be no training that evening at Imberhorne. Then on Friday evening the under 15s will also be at Horsham. The week ends with the under 17s and under 20s at their last Sunday match of the season at Lewes. I expect all the teams will be missing athletes because of the school summer holidays but please make every effort to go to your particular match.

What’s happening over the next week ?

Tuesday July 22 – training for all at Imberhorne from 7 for young athletes and from 7.40 for older athletes.

Thursday July 24 – under 13 evening match at Horsham. Meet at Horsham by 5.45

Thursday July 24 – no training at Imberhorne.
