Results from Saturday in Southampton
We’ve started the summer season with 8 of our athletes joining with athletes from Lewes and Haywards Heath for the first match in the under 17 and under 20 league. A long journey down to Southampton where sunshine and wind was waiting for us – the wind helping the sprinters and horizontal jumpers.
It was great to see Tara Deeley at last going under 6 minutes for the 1500 metres in her first under 17 competition – indeed she was under 5 minutes and 50 seconds as well as she came home in 5 minutes 49.5 seconds. The javelin didn’t go quite as well as she had 3 no-throws. Sarah Bentley had to wait for ages for her 400 metres hurdles race (89.3 seconds) and then went over to the shot the wait meant that she missed 2 of the 3 rounds. So she putt the shot 6.57 metres and didn’t realise until later that this won her the B string. Lois Drummie won her under 17 80 metres hurdles race comfortably in 12.5 seconds, but found the wind rather troublesome in the javelin.
Among the men Jamie Holme produced a pb in the under 17 100 metres in 11.7 seconds and was close to his pb in the 200 with 24.1 seconds. Harry Durgan was close to his best in the under 17 1500 metres in 4 minutes 43.9 seconds and putt the 5k shot a useful 6.97 metres – and ended with a throw of the 800 gram javelin. In the horizontal jumps under 17s Jamie Osborne and Rienel Bronilla were both just over 5 metres in the long jump with Rienel 10.38 metres in the triple jump. Jamie added a 1.50 high jump and 59.6 seconds in the 400 metres.
However perhaps the best performances came from under 20 Abby Beswick with 4 pbs during the afternoon – and despite these 4 pbs she didn’t win any of the events. 9.21 metres in the shot in one of the early field events before a 12.5 seconds run in the 100 metres. She then arrived at the long jump pit just a couple of minutes before the event was due to start. A safe early jump, but still over 5 metres, got her under way as she improved with each jump. Her last jump ended up at 5.60 metres which is the best long jump ever done by one of our ladies. Then she had a break before the 200 metres race – and a fourth pb of 25.4 seconds. Both her 100 and 200 times are just 0.1 seconds over the club records.
