Schools County Championships on Saturday June 13
A good day for most of our athletes at the Sussex Schools Championships with, once again, Abby Beswick leading the way. She was entered for both the senior girls 100 and 200 metres but late in the week the athletes were told that there would be heats in the 200. This would have meant that the heat plus 2 finals would have all taken part within 90 minutes of each other.
However only 3 girls turned up for the 200 heats and it was therefore run as the final which Abby won in 25.6 seconds – with the other 2 girls some way behind. This left time for Abby to recover for the 100 metres, which was a straight final. And, this time against some strong competition, Abby picked up her second gold medal with a new pb of 12.2 seconds – and a new club record.
Another gold medal for a club member came in the intermediate boys high jump as Dan Elliott won with a clearance of 1.68 metres – the same height as the lad who finished second but Dan won on count-back. It would be great to see Dan taking part in some of our league matches !!
Henry Aronson was hoping to take a bit more off his previous best in the junior boys 800 metres, but looked a little below par. He came third in his race but would have been a little disappointed not to have got closer to the 2 athletes ahead of him. Jamie Allbeury also ran in the same race. Another third place came in the junior boys 100 metres with James Hulme continuing his excellent season with a time of 12.3 seconds. Jamie Holme was a late entrant in the intermediate boys 200 metres and was a good fourth in 24.2 seconds.
Emmie van Lieshout made the final of the junior girls 200 metres while Roisin Bell couldn’t quite make the final of the intermediate girls 100 metres.
Other field events saw Ben Beard throwing three metres more than he has done before – and going over 30 metres for the first time – in the junior boys discus to come fourth with 30.68 metres. Amber West was a little below her best with 4.34 metres in the junior girls long jump and Georgia Volrath-Dale was rather blown away in the intermediate girls hammer which was won by our former member Vicki Pellett – Vicki went over 50 metres for the first time.
A second place medal came the way of Lois Drummie in the Surrey championships in the intermediate girls 300 metres hurdles with a new pb (and a new club record) of 47.13 seconds. Lois has been struggling with a foot all summer and she aggravated it at on landing from the first hurdle and di well to complete the race. And in far away Somerset Mia Russell jumped a new pb in the junior girls long jump with 4.65 metres.
