News from Gateshead, Lewes and Brighton

English Schools Championships

Abby Beswick was our only athlete taking part in the English Schools Championships at Gateshead. She was doing the senior girls long jump – her third different event in these championships in the last 3 years – and she came an excellent 5th with a best jump of 5.58 metres on the Saturday afternoon. Very well done to Abby.

Senior match at Lewes on Sunday

And at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning at Lewes who do I see (after a long journey back from Gateshead on Saturday evening) but Abby ? One of only 4 ladies – Sarah Rusling, Sarah Killick-Bird and Amber West the other 3 – at the senior match yesterday in some unpleasant wet and windy conditions.

The men had a couple more athletes than the ladies with a welcome re-appearance from Tim Ivorson on holiday from Sweden.

I don’t have the full results from the match but we probably finished third of the 4 teams competing – and I know Abby jumped a couple of centimetres further than she had done 20 hours earlier in Gateshead with 5.60 metres.

Sussex Under 11/13 Championships a week ago at Brighton

I have been away for much of the last couple of weeks and wasn’t around for the above championships at Brighton – with star performances from Hannah Plumb in winning the high jump and the girls 4 x 100 relay team of Ella West, Luci Sydenham, Mille Davis and Olivia Ashton winning their race in a new club record time. Further details – and photos – appear on our facebook pages.

Another few busy days coming up

We are holding the club championships this week for our under 11 and under 13 athletes. On Tuesday July 12 at Sackville School we will be doing the 800 and 200 metres races for under 13s with 600 metres and howler throwing for under 11s. Then on Thursday July 14 it’s the shorter sprints plus hurdles and some field events at Imberhorne School.

And on Saturday July 16 the under 13 and under 15 athletes have their fourth league match of the season down on the Sussex coast at Hastings.

What’s happening over the next week ?

Tuesday July 12 – under 11/13 club championships day 1 at Sackville. Older athletes will be able to train at the same time.

Thursday July 14 – under 11/13 club championships day 2 at Imberhorne. Older athletes will be able to train at the same time.

Saturday July 16  – match for under 13 and under 15 athletes at Hastings.
