Summer track and field is under way

Senior Match at Hastings

The summer track and field season got properly under way on Saturday down in Hastings where the senior team were competing against Horsham, the combined Lewes/Haywards Heath team as well as the host club. A coolish wind blew from time to time – unfortunately against the sprinters – but the weather wasn’t too bad. Dry and, at times, bright and sunny.

The ladies team was able to cover many of the events and we started with a double first from Lois Drummie and Sarah Killick-Bird in the 400 hurdles. Abby Beswick wasn’t able to do any sprinting and so spent much of the match with Cat Shin throwing things – however Abby sneaked out of the throws to jog round the 400 and 800 while Cat triple-jumped for the first time in 3 years.

Naomi Insole (800m) and Katie Wheeler (1500m) made their first appearances in the senior league, as did Sam Curtis in the mens 800m and James Pringle in the mens sprints. The men however had too many gaps to fill although they had their own double first – in the shot putt with Lincoln Campbell and Eddie Vermeer. Eddie went on to complete a successful afternoon for him with wins in the A string hammer and discus while Phil Rogers won the B string javelin.

We finished a rather distant fourth. Our next senior match is on Sunday May 21 a bit nearer to home at Horsham.
