Another warm and busy week

A busy few days

We’ve had a busy few days at the end of last week. Thursday evening saw our under 13s in action at Horsham. Many of the teams seemed to suffer, as we did, from schools breaking up – either end-of-year school dos or from family holidays. Just 4 boys but 8 girls and we did perhaps slightly better than we might have expected – third place way behind the 2 big teams of Crawley and Horsham.

A couple of days later and we were on a coach going back into Essex for the third time this season for our under 13 and under 15 athletes. Again a disappointing response from the younger athletes – just 4 girls and 2 boys in the under 13 age-group. Grace McCullough continued her excellent season with a new under 13 club record in the 75 metres, as well as equalling the record in the 150 metres (she ran the same time of 20.8 seconds at both Horsham and Woodford). She long ago set a new record in the under 13 shot. Just as pleasing was to see Ola Adamkowska winning the B string hurdle in one of the first races of the day and then, right at the end of the day, Chloe Grantham and Katya Kashubina making it a double first in the javelin.

The under 15s were out in reasonable numbers – and making lots of noise on the coach – and as has been the case all season the under 15 boys ended the day with a clear victory in the 4 x 300 metres relay. They set a new club record, beating the record that they themselves set earlier in the year at Walthamstow. They will have one further go at a further new record in the under 15 league final at the very end of August. Otherwise Cameron Wells was stung on his mouth by a wasp who was lurking on his drink bottle, Christian Given had a pair of pbs in the vertical jumps (pole vault and high jump) and Rachel Tyler had enough energy left when we got back to East Grinstead to treat us to a display of a number of gymnastic jumps.

Forthcoming training sessions

A reminder that we will continue training on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings through the school summer holidays. We will take a break in the second half of September but for the next few weeks we will be training.

Matches coming up

This coming weekend we have a couple of matches. On Friday evening July 27 the under 15s will be at Horsham for a Sussex League match and then on Sunday July 29 is the last league match of the season for those who of you who were in school years 10 to 13. This match takes place at Dartford and Oliver Harnett is contacting you.

Also on Sunday July 29 both Mya Lake and Grace McCullough will be competing for Sussex in an under 13 inter-county match at Kingston. We wish them both well.
