With a fairly full boys’ team the club’s under 13s did well to come third in their league match on Thursday evening at Horsham – behind Crawley and Horsham but ahead of Worthing, Haywards Heath and Chichester. We were again short of girls but, unlike the previous match, we did now have enough girls to field a relay team.
The throws proved to be our strongest area with a great double first in the boys discus. Kiall Fellows has been throwing well in training and he threw a new pb with 19.14 metres to win the A string with Ben Beard’s 15.85 metres winning the B string. The same pair nearly repeated their double success in the shot with Ben’s 6.95 metres getting him second in the A string while Kiall’s 6.35 metres won the B string. And in the girls event Hannah Sands’ new pb of 14.88 metres gained her second place in the girls javelin.
On the track Oli Stuart gained our only first place when his 13.2 seconds in the hurdles gave him the win. In the other track events we managed to fill most of the places in the boys’ races (except the B string 1000 metres) with a series of third and fourth places. The 2 Robbies – Easton and Byrne – were within 0.1 seconds of each other in the 75 metres and Scott Shephard was second in the B string 150 metres with Dylan Holland, Paddy Mayo and Alfie Cubberley doing the longer races.
The girls found things a little tougher but Katherine Woodhouse, Jess Shephard and Emmie van Lieshoult – together with Hannah Sands – kept going in their various events and brought home valuable points.
The team’s next Sussex Under 13 league match is on Thursday July 25th evening – again at Horsham – and let’s hope we will have a few more girls to fill out more of the events.
We also had our under 17 and under 20 athletes competing today Sunday at Sutton Valence as part of Team Sussex. A lovely sunny and warm day, but yet again there was a stiff wind blowing against the sprinters and sprint hurdlers – when will they get a wind in their favour ? I don’t have the full results just yet and so I’m afraid that you’ll have to wait. We also had a few athletes competing at the Crawley Open Meeting last Wednesday but again I don’t yet have results.
But I do have some details of the inter-schools competition final which was held at Gateshead on Saturday. This is the competition for schools teams – and our local schools Sackville and Imberhorne were knocked out in the earlier rounds. However Millfield Preparatory School in Somerset reached the final for girls in school years 7 and 8 and Mia Russell was in the team. Competing over higher hurdles than normal she was fourth in the 75 metres hurdles in 14.0 seconds and she then cleared 1.20 metres in the high jump.
What’s happening this week ?
Tuesday July 2nd – training for all at Imberhorne from 7
Thursday July 4th – training for all at Imberhorne from 7
