The Sussex Under 13 league team had their third match of the season last Thursday evening at Horsham and we were again a bit short of girls – though we just had enough to field a relay team at the end of the evening – and there weren’t as many boys as we would have liked.
Mia Russell earned a couple of second places for the girls – though her hurdles race was so close that it was difficult to decide who was first and who was second. She did 12.4 seconds in the race which is a pb (though she has done 12.4 in a school match – but school timings don’t count as they normally have non-qualified starters and time-keepers). She was also second in the long jump, though disappointed she only jumped 3.93 metres.
Amelia Barton in the 150 metres and discus, Jess Shephard in the shot and high jump and Katherine Woodhouse in the 75 metres did their best and then combined with Mia for the relay. And it was good to see under 11 Lucy Rogers doing the non-scoring long jump.
For the boys we have come to expect good things from Oli Stuart and he didn’t disappoint in this match. Two first places in his events, though in neither event was he pushed hard. 12.8 seconds in the 75 metres hurdles and 4.54 metres in the long jump. Ben Beard and Kiall Fellows have provided good support in the throws and they produced 3 pbs between them. Ben over 7 metres in the shot (7.31 metres) and Kiall 19.41 metres and Ben 16.12 in the discus. Let’s see Kiall going over 20 metres soon. Our sprinters – Alistair Schofield, Dylan Holland and Scott Shephard – impressed Alf Smart and Fintan Monge completed the team.
We also had two under 11s doing non-scoring with Fin Gadd looking very sharp with 11.6 seconds in his 75 metres race and Daniel O’Sullivan looking good in his 600 metres.
As usual the strong teams from Crawley and Horsham were well ahead with Chichester also having a strong squad for this match. We came fourth ahead of both Worthing and Haywards Heath. On Sunday September 1st we have the last match of the season at K2. For this match the 6 western division teams (including ourselves) get together with the 6 eastern division teams for a grand final.
A reminder to all our athletes that we will continue to train at Imberhorne Upper School on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the usual times throughout the school summer holidays.
