I now have the results from the Sussex Under 15 league match last Friday evening at Broadbridge Heath. Although school activities had an effect on some of our athletes – a week’s camping out for some Sackville students left them a bit tired – we still had a good turn-out of athletes with some good performances.
We started the match on a high with a double first in the girls hammer – Georgia Volrath-Dale in her first match throwing 20.44 metres to win the A string with Vicki Pellett not far behind on 20.15 metres to win the B string. Vicki later went on to win the shot with 8.44 metres and a second place in the discus while Georgia later took on the 800 metres. Sarah Hennessy and Lizzie Aronson made up a strong throwing team with Sarah doing a new pb in her non-scoring hammer – 17.52 metres.
In the boys throws it was Matt Hennessy who produced some good consistent performances with good support from Ewan Dallas (who won the B string shot with 7.53 metres) and Kiall Fellows throwing the heavier 1.25 discus for the first time. Luke Webb didn’t quite make 20 metres in the javelin but compensated for this with a good 1.30 metres high jump.
Thomas Dean had a good evening of jumps with a new pb in the long jump – not quite getting up to 5 metres with 4.97 metres – and 1.40 metres in the high jump. Jamie Osborne was not far behind Thomas in the long jump where his 4.90 metres won him the B string and in the girls long jump Mia Russell was again over 4 metres, competing against athletes 2 years older than herself.
Things were a little harder on the track but Mia started the match with a good second place in the hurdles and later Sam Havers gained a good second place in the A string 200 metres as he charged down the home straight after an easy bend run. Jamie Osborne ran well to come second in the B string 100 metrs in 13.3. Under 13s Hannah Sands and Emmie van Lieshout ran well but clearly found things difficult against older and stronger girls.
Once again we were the noisiest team at the match with lots of cheering for our athletes in the track events and we were a comfortable third. We are unlikely to be able to match the strength and numbers of the Horsham and Crawley teams, but it was good to finish well clear of Chichester and Haywards Heath – although far more importantly it was good to see lots of our athletes taking part and trying their best. It’s why we do all the training and it’s what our coaches look for – lots of athletes competing.
Our third match of the season is not far away – Friday August 2nd again at Horsham.
