Some news from Sheffield and from Bexhill. Let’s start with the news from Bexhill on Sunday January 5th where the Sussex Cross-Country championships took place, and in conditions that were not as bad as expected, given the rain and wind over the last couple of weeks. We had only two athletes taking part – Liam Rieley in the under 15 boys race and Ewan Dallas as a non-scorer in the under 17 boys race. Both completed the course and so well done to both of them.
Further north in Sheffield Ryan Spivey was competing in the heptathlon (therefore 7 events) in the national under 20 indoor combined events championships. On the Saturday Ryan started with the 60 metres sprint and a time of 7.77 seconds for 628 points which was followed by a long jump of 5.99 metres and 584 points. 12.16 metres in the short earned 616 points and the pole vault gained 423 points after his clearance of 3.27 metres. He ended day 1 in 7th place. However the second day of combined events competitions is normally Ryan’s stronger day – and this again turned out to be the case.
Ryan started day 2 with a 60 metres hurdles time of 8.86 seconds and 777 points before earning another 679 points when he cleared 1.86 metres in the high jump. And his biggest point-scorer came in the final event – the 1,000 metres. A time of 2 minutes 44.54 seconds gave him 820 points. Add them all up and you get 4527 points and this meant that Ryan had climbed a couple of places to finish 5th. So very well done to Ryan and an excellent way to start his year.
