Last Monday June 22 we had three athletes competing in the Independent English Schools championships in Birmingham. Maddie Sims was competing in the under 11 age-group (school years 4 and 5) and had a great day with 2 gold medals – I minute 56.2 seconds in the 600 metres and a winning long jump of 3.93 metres. Both of these performances are new under 11 club records. Sister Izzy was in the under 13 races (school years 6 and 7) and, after coming third in the 800 metres in 2 minutes and 47.1 seconds, she produced another gold medal in the 1500 metres with a winning time of 5 minutes 35.5 seconds. The girls brought their medals down to training on Tuesday evening. Naomi Insole found things a bit harder in the under 15 age-group where she finished down the field in the 800 metres in 2 minutes 42.9 seconds.
Looking forward to the All-England Schools Championships to be held in far-away Gateshead on July 10 and 11 we will have one EG athlete with Abby Beswick selected for the senior girls 100 metres – the provisional timetable shows that there will be heats and semi-finals on Friday and then the final on Saturday afternoon. I imagine that she will also be part of a Sussex relay team. We with her well. Last year Abby reached the final of the 80 metres hurdles in the intermediate girls category.
