Disappointing turn-out for match at Woking on Sunday
Only three athletes were able to go to Woking for the under 17 and under 20 match – Abby, Ben Beard and Mia – though Emmie would have been there but she fell in a school match on Thursday and scraped skin off her knees and elbows. Mind you many of the clubs were a bit light on athletes.
I don’t have the full results as yet but Ben set three new pbs in his 3 under 17 throws – discus, shot and javelin. Abby won both the long jump (5.38 metres) and 200 and Mia won the B string shot with just under 9 metres. All three took part in the 4 x 100 relays.
I had an e-mail from Cat Shin telling me that she was due to go to a talk given by a lady by the name of Heather Driscoll. Older club members will remember that we had a Heather Driscoll (and a brother Matthew) who competed for us for a number of years in the late 1990s and early 2000s – Heather was a triple and long jumper. Indeed she is our fourth best ever female triple jumper with a best of 10.57 metres from 2002 (and Cat holds our overall triple jump record).
And was it the same Heather Driscoll ? Yes it was – and Cat spent some time talking to her.
Matches over the next week
This coming Friday evening July 1 we have an under 15 match at Horsham while on Sunday July 3 the Sussex under 13 championships – as well as the under 11 quadkids championships – are taking place at Brighton. We have a good number of athletes taking part in these championships and we wish them all well.
Before then we have some of our Notre Dame athletes competing in the national Independent Schools championships on Wednesday June 29 in Birmingham – Maddie and Izzy Sims and Emma Wood.
Looking a little further ahead Abby Beswick will be competing for Sussex in the long jump at the All-England Schools Championships in the far north-east of the country at Gateshead. The championships take place on Friday July 8 and Saturday July 9 but I don’t know which day the long jump takes place. We wish her well and a nice following breeze when it’s her turn to jump.
Sunday July 10 will also see the senior team in action down the road in Lewes.
