We’ve reached the end of a very busy few days, although school events and school holidays had some effect on the numbers competing in the various matches. In particular the second day of the club championships on Tuesday saw only 2 girls in the under 13 200 metres and 2 boys in their race. We will have to have a serious think about whether we should continue to hold club championships for under 13 athletes.
Last Thursday evening was the third midweek match in the Sussex Under 13 league which I was unable to get to (and I’m still waiting for the results) and then Friday evening was the third match for the Sussex Under 15 league – again no results as yet though I do know that Ethan Scott (a first year under 13) went under 5 minutes for the first time in the 1500 metres. Both of these matches took place at Horsham.
Then on Sunday it was the turn of our Under 17 and Under 20 athletes in their last league match of the summer. Only 6 of our athletes were able to go to the match at Croydon. A seems to have been the case for most of our matches there was a breeze against most of the sprinters – and also against most of the long and triple jumpers. Why they didn’t switch the horizontal jumps so that they were jumping with the wind I don’t know. This was Abby Beswick’s last match in the league and she was able to win both her 100 metres and long jump, though she twisted an ankle in the long and so missed out on the 200 and the sprint relay.
A reminder that training continues throughout the school summer holidays
We may now be in the school summer holidays but we continue to train all through the holiday period. Tuesdays from 7 to 8.30 at Sackville and then Imberhorne on Thursday evenings.
Where can you still do some athletics over the next few weeks
The start of the school summer holidays often feels like the end of the athletics season with few league matches left. However there are a number of Open Meetings taking place in the next few weeks and we’ll do our best to tell you about those which are reasonably local.
That said there are still some matches for us as a club:
Saturday August 20 – senior match at Tooting Bec
Friday September 2 – under 15 match at Brighton
Sunday September 4 – under 13 match at K2
Saturday and Sunday September 10 and 11 – Sussex Combined Events Championships
Forthcoming Open Meetings
There are three local Open Meetings taking place in the next couple of weeks:
Wednesday evening 27 July at K2
Tuesday evening August 2 at Tonbridge
Sunday August 7 at Horsham. I especially recommend this meeting and I have entry forms which I will be giving them out at training.
What’s happening over the next week ?
Tuesday July 26 – training for all at Sackville from 7 to 8.30 for all athletes.
Wednesday July 27 – we are helping at the Ashurstwood sports day at the John Pears playing fields.
Wednesday July 27 evening – open meeting at K2.
Thursday July 28 – training for all at Imberhorne. 7 to 8 for under 13s and 7.30 to 8.45 for older athletes.
Saturday July 30 – academy training at Imberhorne from 11 to 12.
