It’s been a busy few days
Thursday at Horsham for the under 13s, Saturday for the schools inter-county match at K2, Sunday on the coach to Woodford for the under 13/15 match, and then I had my grandchildren’s all-day primary school sports day in Haslemere on Monday. All this means that this week’s notes are a bit later than normal.
Under 13 match last Thursday evening
It seems a long time ago now. With one or two late and unexpected arrivals we had 18 athletes – which meant at the very end we were able to field 2 non-scoring relay teams. Well done to everybody, perhaps especially Gabi Holland who had earlier done three events in an after-school match, and still made it to Broadbridge Heath and came second in the 1200 metres.
Trip to Woodford on Sunday
After the rather disappointing number of athletes who came to our previous match in Walthamstow we did have a better number travelling again into Essex for the match in Woodford. However we still had just 4 under 13 boys and 5 under 15 girls. We came fourth in the 7 team match – one place higher than in both of the first 2 matches – and just one more athlete would have given us enough points to come third.
Performances that stood out for me – well the under 13 girls javelin. Chloe Grantham threw over 20 metres for the first time to finish second in the A string while Katya Kashubina, who has been steadily improving over the season to date, was probably very surprised to win the B string. Also out in the field Lucy Rogers won the under 15 girls discus with just over 21 metres and Cameron Wells added a centimetre to his previous best with 3.06 metres in the pole vault – and he cleared 3.11 metres only to see his pole knocking the bar off.
On the track a double first in the under 13 girls 75 metres from Grace McCullough and Mya Lake and once again our under 15 boys 4 x 300 relay team rounded off the match with another excellent win.
Match this week
A somewhat lighter weekend coming up with just the senior team having a match – and not too far away. We are travelling down to Lewes on Saturday for the third match of the season. It will be good to see Abby Beswick again, though she is still not able to do sprinting and long jumping.
