Senior match at Lewes
We went to Lewes for our third league match with hopes of a third second place, but in the end had to settle for third place, albeit with a higher point count than in either of our first two matches. Hastings were as expected on top while the combined Lewes and Haywards Heath team benefited from being the home team and were able to fill most of the events.
We dominated the field events. With 16 field events, each having A and B strings, we were first in 20 of the 32 events – and that without any pole vaulters. Having Lois Drummie and Abby Beswick back from university helped a lot with Abby concentrating on the throws, while it was great to see both of our male long jumpers – Daniel Rusling and Dorian Szatmari – going over 6 metres.
On the track things were a bit tougher, although Rebekah Tyler won both the 100 and 200 A strings (and the shot A string as well) – and she anchored the ladies 4 x 100 relay team to a comfortable win. Our lack of runners in most of the longer races also didn’t help in our hope of again securing second place.
Our seniors are back in action in three weeks time on July 14 at Erith.
English Schools Selection (and other Sussex selections)
Cameron Wells has been selected to represent Sussex in the junior boys pole vault at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham in July. Very well done to Cameron and we wish him well in what is always a fantastic athletics event.
And over this last weekend Cameron has been representing Sussex in a schools inter-county combined events meeting at Ashford. 3 pbs in the 5 events in the pentathlon (including 3.5 seconds off his previous 800 metres best) plus a pb in the overall event.
We’ve also had Daniel Rusling selected for the Sussex team in an inter-county match at Chelmsford taking place the day after the Lewes match above. In the match at Lewes he triple-jumped 12.33 metres for a pb, but he did even better the next day at Chelmsford with a best of 13.05 metres.
Dorian Szatmari will also represent Sussex in the long jump in an under 17 inter-county match in a couple of weeks.

We’ve got a great number of our younger athletes entered for these championships at the Withdean Stadium in Brighton on Saturday and we hope that they all enjoy the competition – a few medals would be great.

And next Sunday our under 17 and under 20 athletes will go to the brand new facilities at Walton-on-Thames to join with fellow athletes from the Lewes, Haywards Heath and Eastbourne clubs. Oliver Harnett is contacting you with further details.
