It must be summer ……… (updated for news from the Crawley Open meeting at K2)

News from Sunday’s Crawley Open Meeting

We had a good turn out of our younger athletes at Sunday’s open meeting at K2 – and we had a new club record beating the previous record set over 35 years ago by one of the club’s giants.

Gabi Holland won her under 13 1500 metres race in 5 minutes 3.76 seconds to beat Raynor Harmsworth’s time set in 1983. Raynor’s time back then was just over 5 minutes and 10 seconds. Gabi’s time was an AAA grade 1 performance and she may well be number 1 in the country at the moment !

Jed Defriend also equalled another club record – again previously set some years ago. However it’s only fair to say that the event is not run that often. The under 15 boys 80 metres sprint saw Jed finishing in 10.7 seconds – the same time that Tim Ivorson recorded in 1997.

A mention for Grace McCullough with a shot putt of 9.10 metres with the under 15 girls 3k shot – an AAA grade 3 performance. And good to see Hannah and Rebecca Gibbon, Harry and Lucy Rogers, Mya Lake, Alex Thompson and Emma Smyth all competing. Well done everybody on getting the summer season underway – if only the weather were a bit better as well.

The summer season starts this week

Our senior team get the league season under way on Saturday April 13 down in Hastings and we wish them well. This will be the first of 5 matches for the team over the summer months. We’ll bring you news of how they do next week.

Looking a couple of weeks further ahead our young athletes in school years 6, 7, 8 and 9 will have their first match on Saturday 27 April at the Julie Rose stadium in Ashford in Kent.

It may be school Easter holidays but ……..

….training at Imberhorne continues as normal on Thursday evenings.

It’s time to renew your membership

You should now be playing your membership fees in time for the summer season. Paying by bank transfer is the simplest but you can also pay by cash or cheque on training nights. New club members will also need to buy a club vest (and you can try one on at our training evenings).

What’s happening in the next week ?

Monday April 8 – circuit training at Imberhorne.

Tuesday April 9 – sprint and long/triple jump training for invited athletes from 7 to 8 at Imberhorne.

Thursday April 11 – training for all at Imberhorne from 7 to 8.

Saturday April 13 – senior match for ladies and men at William Parker school in Hastings. For adults and for those in school years 10 and above. If you haven’t heard from the team managers but are available to compete then contact Lester Medcalf.

Sunday April 14 – club’s coaches will have a tidy up of the equipment hut at Imberhorne from 10 to 12. Other club members are welcome to join us.
