Match on Sunday May 5
A number of our under 17 and under 20 athletes – school years 10 and upwards – went to Medway Park in Gillingham for their first league match of the season, as part of the Team Sussex squad. Team Sussex is a team made up of athletes from Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne and ourselves.
The weather wasn’t over kind with the sprinters having to run into the wind, as did the long and triple jumpers. But the rain kept away and when the sun came out it felt sort of OK.
In the match last week for our younger athletes our javelin throwers did very well, and Mattie Fish continued this trend by winning the under 17 javelin with an excellent throw of 35.52 metres – which he backed up with over 29 metres in the discus. Another of our throwers, Jack Sanders, produced an excellent shot putt of 10.82 metres to win the under 17 shot. Cameron Wells came up with new pbs in winning the pole vault (3.60) after clearing 1.60 metres in the high jump. And the other first year under 17s all produced excellent performances – particularly good to see Joshua Stewart enjoying the match.
Among the under 20 athletes Amelia Barton would have been a bit surprised that she managed to win the shot, while also coming up with a pb in the triple jump. And Dorian Szatmari tried the triple jump for the first time and may have fallen in love with the event !!
Overall the Team Sussex athletes finished in second place with the home Medway & Maidstone club way ahead of us.
Matches in this coming week
At this time of year matches come thick and fast. Our under 13s (school years 6 and 7) are in action on Tuesday evening in the Sussex Under 13 League at Crawley’s K2 while next weekend (May 11 and 12) we have about 30 athletes taking part in the Sussex County Championships. (And on this coming Wednesday at K2 a number of our athletes will be taking part in trials for the Sussex Schools Championships.)
