Sussex County Championships
We don’t go into the County Championships expecting to win lots of medals and this year was no exception. 10 medals in all, but no first places among them. Our recent improvement in the throws was again noticeable. Rebekah Tyler picked up 2 throws medals in the under 17 age-group – second in the shot (10.22 metres) and third in the discus (26.95 metres). Ella Kessell perhaps surprised herself with second place in the under 15 hammer (22.88 metres) while Chloe Grantham – half the size of many of the other throwers – came away with a third place in the under 15 javelin (22.01 metres). Jason Sullivan was also on the medal podium with third place in the under 15 shot (6.26 metres), while Grace McCullough was squeezed out of third place in the under 15 shot (9.19 metres) with one of the last throws.
Our jumpers also picked up a few medals. Cameron Wells in the under 17 pole vault was jumping first thing on Saturday morning and earned himself a second place (3.50 metres), while late on the first day Dorian Szatmari came third in the under 20 long jump (5.98 metres). And a couple of triple jump third places for Grace McCullough in the under 15 girls event (9.53 metres) and Phil Rogers in the senior mens event (10.32 metres).
That leave just one medal to tell you about – and that was our only medal on the track with Amelia Barton third in the under 20 100 metres (14.13 seconds).
And lots more encouraging performances, especially from those who had moved up an age-group since 2018. Full results should soon appear on the Sussex AAA website.
Sussex Under 13 match last Tuesday evening
Our under 13s also found things a bit tough in their first midweek match of the summer but did well to come fourth of the 6 teams taking part. The boys managed to fill most of their events, although our shortage of under 13 girls meant we had gaps in their events – and gaps means lost points. High spots came from Albert Holroyd with a swift run in the B string 150 metres and also winning the discus – interestingly he improved in both of these events at the County Championships a few days later.
Nevertheless all those at the match tried hard and kept on encouraging each other in their various events. Well done to them all.
More matches coming up this weekend
Another busy weekend coming up with matches on both Saturday and Sunday. Our under 13 and under 15s make the comparatively short trip down to Lewes on Saturday, with our senior team going to Wimbledon on Sunday. We wish them all well.
