Another good weekend for our throwers
Just one match this past weekend on the other side of the Thames at Mile End meant that I rediscovered the joys of Blackwall Tunnel on my way to the match for our under 17 and under 20 athletes. We combine with athletes from Eastbourne, Lewes and Haywards Heath in this league but our 11 athletes must have provided about 50% of the combined team – and the willingness of our athletes to do as many events as they could probably meant that we provided over 50% of the points scored by the combined team.
I have reported a number of times this summer that our throwers are producing lots of good results – and that was true again. Rebekah Tyler got us underway in one of the early events with a shot putt pb of 11.74 metres – over a metre better than her previous best last summer. She had another 2 throws over 11 metres. She did win the under 17 event, and later she won the under 17 discus as well. Jack Sanders (10.75 metres) and Mattie Fish made it a double first in the under 17 shot and Mattie went on to win the under 17 discus (pb of 30.41 metres) and under 17 javelin (32.72 metres). Katie Wheeler did her bit by volunteering for the under 20 shot and discus as well.
Elsewhere Cameron Wells found another 10 centimetres in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.70 metres – will he get to 4 metres by the end of the season ? Ella West triple-jumped over 10 metres again to win the under 17 jump and, perhaps to her surprise, also won the under 17 B string 200 metres.
On the track Joshua Stuart, Daniel leRoy, Patrick Spurle and Beau Beames kept the points coming in and Amelia Barton completed the squad with her usual round of different events. Thanks to you all for the support you gave to each other and to your willingness to fill in as required. Keep it up.
The under 17 and under 20 team is back in action on Sunday June 30 at Erith.
A slightly less busy couple of weeks ahead
This coming Thursday May 30 our under 15s have the first match in the Sussex Under 15 league at K2 – first event at 6pm. Let’s hope that not too many of our athletes are away and that we can fill most of the events. (Please note that the above under 15 match was originally to be held on the Friday evening – but has now been moved to the Thursday evening at K2.)
We have no matches over the weekend of June 1 and 2. And the following Saturday June 8 sees the Sussex County Schools championships at K2, where a number of our athletes will be representing their school. As a club we have no say in who is selected to do what event in these championships.
What’s happening in the next week ?
Monday May 27 – no circuit training this week.
Tuesday May 28 – training at Sackville from 7 to 8 for all athletes.
Wednesday May 29 – Sussex and Surrey Schools Combined Events Championships at K2. First event midday.
Thursday May 30 – match for under 15s at K2 from 6pm.
Thursday May 30 – NO TRAINING AT IMBERHORNE
Saturday June 1 – academy training at Imberhorne from 11 to 12.
