With the arrival of the school summer holidays numbers attending matches and training have dropped off. Last Thursday evening we had 5 boys and 5 girls for our under 15 match at a very hot K2 – but of course most of the other teams were affected as well although Crawley in particular are a big enough club to still fill most of the events. We came third in the match behind Crawley and Horsham. Chloe Grantham again went over 25 metres in the javelin and there were wins for Rachel Tyler in the high jump (though not at the height she would have liked) and James Knott in the shot and Jed Defriend in the B string 200. Ellis Beynon had 3 excellent A string second places in the 100, 300 and long jump. And both relay teams did well to come second – behind Crawley of course.
Sunday saw a number of our under 17 and under 20 athletes making their long way to Mile End on the other side of the Blackwall Tunnel where we were part of Team Sussex. We seemed to provide more athletes than the other clubs within the Team Sussex label. In what felt very much like an end of season match Rebekah Tyler and Jack Sanders won their shot putts for the fourth time this summer, though both a bit down on their best. Cameron Wells worried us with 2 failures at his opening height in the pole vault before going over at the third attempt, but the results that I have seen don’t tell me what his final clearance was. Katie Wheeler put her 15 metre plus discus throw down to the training that she’s recently had from Eddie Vermeer.
Inter-County match for under 13s
We had a couple of athletes representing Sussex in the annual under 13 inter-county match at Kingston on Saturday – a match involving some 13 counties. Gabi Holland was full of cold and did well to come second in her B string 1500 metres race in just over 5 minutes – she’d like to get under 5 minutes before the season ends. Albert Holroyd came a good fifth in the A string discus – with a 3 centimetre improvement to his pb !
We don’t have any matches in the next couple of weeks. Our seniors will have their fifth and last match of the summer on Saturday August 17 at Eltham before the under 15s and under 13s will have their last match at the end of August/beginning of September.
What’s happening in the next week ?
Tuesday July 30 – training at Sackville for all athletes from 7 to 8.
Thursday August 1 – training at Imberhorne. 6.45 to 7.45 for under 13s and for middle distance group. 7.30 to 8.45 for other athletes.
Saturday morning training for our academy athletes has now finished.
Please note that we will continue to train on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings through the school summer holidays, although one or two sessions may have to be cancelled if there are insufficient coaches available. (Coaches are of course allowed to have holidays.)
