First session of the year for Academy athletes
I went to the first Academy session – for those in school years 4 and 5 – last Saturday May 1 at Imberhorne Upper School. It was my first time at an Academy session and it was great to see these 25 athletes of the future taking part in a variety of activities under coaches Eddie Vermeer, Phil Rogers and Belinda Sims with help from Belinda’s daughter Izzy Sims.
A number of parents (and brothers and sisters) were there as well, among them a couple of our athletes from the past – in one case someone from the recent past and in another case from a more distant past.
From the recent past Erin Harnett came along to watch her sister take part, along with their dad Oliver. Erin is now in the army – she holds our under 15 girls club record in the 300 metres.
Going back further to the late 1990s and now watching his daughter taking part in the session was Tony Read. Tony was a good middle distance runner who represented Sussex in the English Schools Championships. He was also a more than capable high-jumper.
