Sussex County Championships on Sunday July 4
I have been away for a few days (in the Yorkshire Dales) and have only just caught up with what our athletes did at the Sussex County Championships down in Brighton on Sunday. Ollie Strange had a very busy day in the under 15 sprints – earning 2 third places in the 200 metres (26.09 seconds) and 300 metres (40.67 seconds) and a second place in the 100 metres (which required heats and then the final) with 12.59 seconds in the 100 final for a new PB – with Albert Holroyd also under 13 seconds for the first time (12.78 seconds) in that final with Lewis Jones making it three EG athletes in the final of the under 15 100. A few seconds off Archie Kessell’s previous best in the 800 metres and new athlete Ethan Golin running well in the 300 metres.
Grace Hill and Zoe Marston found things a little harder than the boys in their under 15 sprints, as did Callie Devlin in the under 15 800 metres.
In the field events we had a couple of first places. So very well done to Oscar Staples for winning the under 17 shot putt with 7.44 metres and to Ella Kessell in the under 17 hammer with yet another PB of 33.32 metres. Both athletes also came up with PBs in other events – Ella in both the shot and the discus and Oscar in the hammer. Chloe Grantham threw a 500g javelin PB (though she threw a few centimetres further with the heavier 600g javelin a couple of weeks ago). And Lewis Jones went over 4 metres for the first time in the under 15 long jump.
Sussex Championships for under 13s and under 11s this coming Saturday July 10
Our younger athletes will have their own County Championships this coming Saturday – again down in Brighton – and we wish them well, and especially the under 11s, on their first experience of county championships.
Senior match on Sunday July 11 at K2
Our older athletes have their second league match of the summer on Sunday at K2 starting at mid-day. Unfortunately we won’t expect to have that many athletes able to compete, but that is also true for some of the clubs in the match.
English Schools Championships this coming weekend
The English Schools Championships are a major competition for school athletes. They were cancelled last year and this year are taking place in Manchester on a rather different basis to normal. None of our members will be taking part but a couple of former members have been selected for these championships and we wish them both well. Cameron Wells will compete in the school year 12 and 13 pole vault with Isaac Lancaster in the school year 10 and 11 pole vault.
